School Paramedics in Sri Lanka!
School Paramedic Service
In many rural regions of Sri Lanka, professional medical help is often far away, and transport to the nearest hospital usually happens by tuk-tuk, which costs valuable time. In such moments, it is crucial to stabilize the injured or sick patient quickly and effectively before transport. This task often goes unfulfilled – unless there are people with the necessary first aid knowledge.
Health Essentials International (H.E.I.) e.V. is therefore launching a school paramedic project to train students in Sri Lankan schools to become first aid heroes. These young helpers should be able to act quickly in emergencies at their school, stabilize patients, and ensure they are safely transported to the hospital, even when professional medical help is not immediately available.
Why is this project so important?
Lack of immediate help: In rural Sri Lanka, there is no quick medical care. Tuk-tuks are often the only means of transport to a hospital, which costs valuable time in emergencies.
First aid stabilizes: Without quick stabilization, accidents or health emergencies can lead to serious consequences. First aid can save lives until the patient reaches a hospital.
Lack of first aid knowledge: In the population, there is often very little knowledge about how to help in emergencies, especially in remote areas.
Our approach
Training school paramedics: Students are trained in first aid so they can react quickly and safely to accidents, injuries, and sudden illnesses in their school.
First aid equipment: Each school receives a complete first aid kit, enabling school paramedics to properly stabilize patients before they are transported to the hospital.
Strengthening the community: Our school paramedics become an important point of contact in their school and also in their community, providing lifesaving help in emergencies.
Why is support important?
Tuk-tuks as transport: Since hospitals are often far away, it is crucial that patients are stabilized during transport to secure their survival.
Lifesaving training: Training school paramedics ensures that help is given quickly and correctly, without losing valuable time.
Project costs: Training and equipping one school paramedic costs around €150.
